In 2013, Volkswagen Launches XL1 Plug-In Hybrid
German automaker, Volkswagen seems to focus on new technology cars. Some rumors in Europe mentioned that Volkswagen has officially confirmed its plan to build a limited run of the XL1 plug-in hybrid concept. As we know, XL1 is a car that has ever been displayed last year at the 2011 Qatar Motor Show.
Some reports also mention that the Volkswagen XL1 plug-in hybrid is running on new modular MQB platform. Unfortunately, there are no images about the car until today because the German carmaker seems to keep it tight, at least until they are ready to test it on the road. However, there are rumors said that the XL1 plug-in hybrid will closely resemble the concept presented in Qatar last year. If the rumor is true, the car will be 65 inches of width, 153 inches of length and 45 inches of height because those were the dimensions of the concept that they brought to Qatar.
But, Volkswagen also confirmed officially about the engine will be used by the XL1 plug-in hybrid. Under its hood, we will find an all-new 2-cylinder diesel engine with 800cc of capacity. Such small engine is capable to produce 88 pound-feet of torque and 48 horsepower. To help the performance, Volkswagen will pair the engine with a 7-speed DSG transmission.
The oil-burner will work in conjunction with an electric motor that produces 27 hp and 103 pound-feet of torque. Extra power will be stored in lithium-ion batteries that will make the car able to travel up to 24 miles using the all-electric mode alone. The XL1 will able to reach 99 miles per hour of top speed. The plug-in hybrid drivetrain is able to push the XL1 accelerating from zero to 60 mph in 11.9 seconds. It is not too fast but it is enough for people who live in crowded cities.
Volkswagen XL1 will be delivered to the European market in 2013 and it will released officially at the Paris Moor Show next fall.
