Recently, Renault announced to the media that they have successfully built what can be called three-cylinder engine, which becomes the firstcomes up fromthe new Renault design. The engine features just 899 ccof displacement and it is made entirely from aluminum. However, even the displacement is small but it is turbocharged and using petrolas fuel. The engine is dubbed the Energy TCe 90.This engine is the 8thof the Energy family, which will be launched to the market officiallywithin 16 months from now. Similar like other engines from the range, the Energy TCe 90 is inspired from breakthrough technologies andexpertise derived from Renault’s Formula 1 team.
The man behind the engineering of the 3-cylinder is Jean-Philippe Mercier whom also becomes the actor of the 4-cylinder type. His expertise in three essential areas, which are reducing friction, a comprehensive grasp of square engine architecture and guaranteed reliability, helpedthe success of the3-cylinder Energy Tce 90development. Jean-Philippe is able to solve friction problems because he applied coefficients used in Formula 1 such as DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coated cam followers, PVD (Physical Vapor Depositioncoating of the rings of the piston and graphitecoated piston skirts. The Renault Energy TCe 90 engine is able to give a specific power output of 100 horsepower per liter, which also becomes the first for an engine of this size.
The 899cc Renault Energy TCe 90 engine produces 90 BHP of power at 5000 rpm and 135 Nm of torque that is available across aboard powerband from 1650 to 5500 rpm. This new engine also sends the fastest airflow tumble effect in the cylinder. Combustion is instantaneous virtually and it takes full advantage of the downsizing to 3 cylinders. It is also equipped with Start-Stop, thermal management and other modern technologies that are commonly found on today’s cars.
