Jeep seriously pushing Wrangler Dragon concept for Chinese production

Jeep Wrangler Dragon Concept Front side angle

Last week at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show, American SUV brand, Jeep, unveiled the Jeep Wrangler Dragon concept to the public. The new Jeep’s SUV is specially aimed for the Chinese market and designed as a way to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. Up to today, the American automaker is still debating whether or not to mass-produce the new SUV. If the production of the Wrangler Dragon is given the green light, big chance, it will be built in the Jeep’s factory plant in the United States and then imported to China and we cannot deny that such process undoubtedly will add several thousands to the price tag of the car.

Currently, Jeep imports all cars they sell in China, but apparently, the American company would change it as soon as possible. Now, the company is in talks with Chinese company and Fiat’s joint venture partner, Guangzhou Automobile Group to find the right solution how to build the SUV there as quickly as possible.

There are some obstacles have to be cleared before a Chinese-built Jeep can be released to the market. Guangzhou Automobile Group will build several models from Chrysler and Fiat in the near future, but they do not have extra capacity to build Jeep SUVs. It means that if the American brand wants to produce a significant amount of models in China, they need to have a new assembly plant.

Another issue circulating around media is that Chrysler, as the authority of Jeep has yet to ask for the approval from the Chinese government to build Jeep SUVs in the country. Mike Manley, the CEO of Jeep said that getting the approval from the Chinese government might take quite a while. However, Jeep believes that the Chinese market is quite responsive with their models. Last year, Jeep sold 22,294 units in China and they are planning to open about 40 new showrooms by the end of this year.

At the Beijing Motor Show this year, Jeep is trying to offer something different to customers in China, especially who love its badge from Jeep Wrangler Dragon. This year, the American automaker brings its Wrangler Dragon concept to China. From the name, we can easily know that this model is specially designed for the Chinese market and the name is chosen to celebrate the Year of the Dragon.

Jeep Wrangler Dragon Interior and Exterior

The Jeep Wrangler Dragon is based on the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. It features an all-black exterior color highlighted by bronze-gold on the front grille slats, headlights surrounds and rear and front badging. Carrying over that color scheme, a set of 18-inch wheels on the American SUV is covered with matte black with high-gloss bronze-gold outer ring. When we look closer to the wheel, we will be able to see a Chinese Dragon character on the center caps. However, Chinese Dragon characters are not only available on it because Jeep also put it on the hood, the side door of the driver and spare tire cover; those spots can be easier to see.

Similar like the exterior, the interior section of the American SUV is also finished with black and gold, including Magic Wand metallic leather on the seat bolsters of the concept car. The theme of the Dragon continues with laser-etched dragon motive on the headrest and dragon-scale motive bronze-gold leather on the outside of the Jeep Wrangler Dragon’s seats.

Mike Manley, Chief Operating Officer for Asia and President and CEO of the American automaker said that his brand is committed to the country and therefore they must design and tailor each vehicle to the specific tastes and preferences of the consumers in China. He added that the Jeep Wrangler Dragon concept is the first vehicle from Jeep specifically designed with Chinese characters and elements and offers a chance for other special editions that might be available for the country in the future.
