C-Max Energi – the First Ever Ford’s Plug-In Hybrid Car
Ford C—Max Energi would be the next hybrid car released by the North American carmaker after the no-plug version. The Energi is different with the no-plug because it applies the technology found in the less-electrified no-plug C-Max hybrid and Focus electric. The C-Max Energi would be the first ever plug-in hybrid vehicle from Ford.
According to Ford, the battery pack in the C-Max Energi will reach a full charge overnight on a 120-volt outlet. But the company does not mention the availability of a faster charging 240-volt. The C-Max Energi is able to the same charger as the Ford Focus Electric that has four-hour fill up. The charging port is just the same as the Focus Electric with amps surrounding the charge port that will light up in sequence to indicate the charging progress.
The lithium-ion batteries in the C-Max Energi are designed for recharging and extended discharge during all electric modes. The battery model in the C-Max energy is also different with the C-Max hybrid no-plug; the no-plug uses air cooled while the Energi brings a temperature-control circuit. When the car is started, it would automatically operate as electric car until the battery reaches a level that requires charging. Then, it will switch to a charge-sustaining mode and operates in regular hybrid mode.
Unfortunately, Ford only shares limited information about the vehicle, especially related to the electric drive operation. Some analysts expected that the C-Max Energi would reach at least the same level as Prius Plug-In, which is reaching 15 miles with the full-charge electric system alone and records 60 mph of top speed. Ford said and claimed that this first ever plug-in hybrid has ability to reach 500 miles using the engine and battery, which means that the car records the most range of any current plug-in cars, including Chevrolet’s Volt.
